More info here.

Scott Miller of The Loud Family and Game Theory has some nice things to say about Jon, “Conversations” and “Lady Sweet” here:

Jon Auer didn’t take a day off from crafting great music in the mid-2000s; his break-out Big Star moment (read on) only barely surpasses this Posies return to form, whose unhurried stroll up perilous baroque scales and back to meaty rock are an immense favorite of everyone in my household. I must have listened to this song a hundred times by now and it never gets old.

End Of Week Update: June 6th, 2009

  • New shows added this week:

7/16 – Ken Stringfellow DJs Arola Nights @ Arola Restaurant @ Hotel Arts. Barcelona, SPAIN
10/28 – Ken Stringfellow @ Club Castro, Skopje, MACEDONIA

  • Ken has joined Twitter – follow his updates @KenStringfellow.
  • Magnet asks artists to name their favorite American power pop songs, and Chris Walla (of Death Cab for Cutie) chose “Solar Sister.” Here’s what he had to say:

It’s their finest moment, the perfect balance of bombastic, tricky cheapness and vocal creme fraische. I can’t understand half the words, but it doesn’t seem to matter that much. I learned more about singing harmonies with this record in my car than I did in three years of choir.

  • Also in Magnet: ‘Frosting On The Beater’ makes their list of Top 15 American Power-Pop Albums, and they’ve republished a 2002 article on the subject of power pop, with comments from Ken.
  • Press for next weekend’s shows in NY: The New Yorker & Ken is interviewed by the Brooklyn blog 24/Seven.
  • Not Lame and American Songwriter review ‘Smoking Kills’.
  • Lastly – Ken is playing with The Sad Knights in Lauzerte, France tonight, and the show will be streamed online at La Grosse Tambouille, 23h France time.

Posie US Festival Dates + Big Star Brief

The Posies will be playing “Frosting On The Beater” at the Taste of Randolph Street Festival June 20th in Chicago (5:30pm – 6:45pm), and they’ll also be at Charlotte Pop Fest in Charlotte, NC on September 24th.

Advance tickets for Charlotte Pop Fest are available here. (Please note they are only allowing 100 advance tickets for the Posies’ show… so get them soon.)

Big Star news:
+ Rhino confirms a box set is in the works.
Scarlett Johansson is covering “I Am The Cosmos” on her next record.

On the topic of Big Star, Bud Scoppa posted a never-published article from 2000 last week on his blog. It comes highly recommended – you’ll see that in the comments, Jody Stephens calls it “one of the best pieces [he’s] ever seen about the band.”

Here’s a snippet on the Posies:

Says Jody Stephens, who handpicked the Posies to fill in the holes for the reunited Big Star: “Frosting on the Beater does to me what all my favorite albums do: They surprise me with a sense of wonder much like the kids in ET must have felt when all their bikes took to the air.”
