Ken Stringfellow’s Tears of Silver Announces EP, US Tour

Tears Of Silver
The Posies’ Ken Stringfellow, Mercury Rev’s Jonathan Donahue and Grasshopper, and Midlake’s Jesse Chandler will be touring together as Tears of Silver, playing selections from their different catalogs, plus a few covers and maybe a new song or two. For the tour, they’ve recorded an EP, including covers of Big Star’s “Nighttime” and Bread’s “Down on My Knees.” You can stream the Big Star cover below.

Much like The Posies’ tour last year, Tears of Silver will be playing unconventional, intimate venues in the cities they’re visiting, and the venue locations will only be revealed the day before the show. The tour starts September 12 in Baltimore, MD and wraps up October 8 in Pittsburgh. There’s currently no Northeast dates, unfortunately. Tickets are on sale now and all tour dates are listed below.

From Brooklyn Vegan, where you can listen to the new songs.

Posies Press Round-Up

The Posies appeared on Seattle’s 107.7 The End last week – check out their session here, with performances of “The Glitter Prize” and “Licenses To Hide.”

The Line of Best Fit asks Ken & Jon the same questions in separate interviews, for an interesting take.

Extensive interview with UberRock.

Jon talked to MTV music book club Jerzy Kosinski’s “Being There”

Jon shares the inspiration for the title of BLOOD/CANDY with Stereo Subversion:

It’s actually kind of from a poem by this guy named Thax Douglas. He’s this kind of local poet in the Chicago area that would come to rock shows and he would write poems for the bands about the bands at their performances. One of the phrases he used to describe us was something about blood candy. I think he was talking about how there is this totally sweet, harmonious side to what we do, but also there’s a lot of passion. There’s also more of a darker undercurrent than just maybe what the melodic, harmonious side might imply.

Spinner covers what to expect on the upcoming tour, and the Philadelphia Examiner asks about influences behind the new album.

Spanish-language interview from the Heineken’s website.

Gail Worley reviews BLOOD/CANDY as her ‘Rad CD of the Week’, and UK Music Review gives it 9/10

Stereogum premieres the first single “The Glitter Prize,” and it’s also featured on Spin’s October playlist.

Big Star news:
+ Rhino confirms a box set is in the works.
Scarlett Johansson is covering “I Am The Cosmos” on her next record.

On the topic of Big Star, Bud Scoppa posted a never-published article from 2000 last week on his blog. It comes highly recommended – you’ll see that in the comments, Jody Stephens calls it “one of the best pieces [he’s] ever seen about the band.”

Here’s a snippet on the Posies:

Says Jody Stephens, who handpicked the Posies to fill in the holes for the reunited Big Star: “Frosting on the Beater does to me what all my favorite albums do: They surprise me with a sense of wonder much like the kids in ET must have felt when all their bikes took to the air.”
