Ken’s “Music You Should Hear” Picks On Amazon

Ken Stringfellow is the Swiss Army Knife of power pop. It was his first band, the Posies, that splashed him all over the hearts and minds of fans and bands alike. Soon thereafter we saw Ken on keyboard, guitar, and bass as a touring member of Big Star, the Minus Five, and R.E.M. Most recently, the Posies have released ‘Every Kind of Light’, and Big Star had Ken in the studio for ‘In Space’. We were thrilled to get such a thoughtul list from such a busy guy.

Guardian of a message

His work is a continuum, claims the 36-year-old Stringfellow, who’s stayed on in Australia for a string of solo dates following the recent REM national tour.

“I’m definitely interesting in accomplishing a lot,” Stringfellow says. “I’ve been trying to find an overarching mission in my life, trying to propel communication of a certain direct emotion between people.

“I’m so into it that I put myself in situations where I do that all the time, whether it’s helping REM with their message, or doing my own thing, or doing the Posies thing.”

‘Where in the crap is Ken Stringfellow?” screams the headline on a page of the singer-songwriter’s website. The answer, last week, was playing with REM.

This week, he’s supporting his mates, Melbourne guitar-rockers Even. Stringfellow agrees the page sums up his “they seek him here, they seek there” reputation.

“Yes, I’m constantly on the move with things I’m doing,” he says. “The first half of last year was about making records; the rest of this year and the first half of next year, those records are emerging, so I’ll see where they take me.”

Stringfellow has been a permanent touring member of REM since the late-’90s Up album tour and he contributed to the album Reveal, the Man on the Moon soundtrack and last year’s Around the Sun. He co-founded the respected American guitar-poppers the Posies, whose new album is due out this year.

Jon and Ken on Bread tribute album

Along with Matt Harris’ band Oranger.

from billboard.com:

Kings Of Convenience’s Erlend Oye, Josh Rouse, Cake, Posies principals Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer and Tarnation’s Paula Frazer are among the artists that have contributed to “Friends and Lovers,” a tribute to ’70s soft rock act Bread. Due April 12 via Badman Recording Co., the set features 14 tracks recorded exclusively for this release.

Oye covers the title cut, which was not among Bread’s 10 top-20 hits on the Billboard pop singles chart between 1969-1977. Rouse chimes in with “It Don’t Matter to Me,” Cake tackles “The Guitar Man” and Frazer offers “Everything I Own.” Bread’s lone No. 1 hit, “Make It With You,” is performed by Oranger.

Other artists featured on “Friends and Lovers” are Call And Response, Dave Derby, Holy Sons, Emily Sparks, the Moore Brothers, former Mojave 3 vocalist Rachel Goswell and Eric Shea & Bart Davenport.
